This weekend I had the great fortune of taking a Mayan Abdominal Self-Care course. This three-day course is the first leg in the journey of practicing a traditional Maya technique on the abdomen. It was absolutely profound. I experienced and learned so many invaluable lessons.
Maya Abdominal Massage (MAM) is a technique that was brought to the modern world by a woman named Rosita Arvigo. She is an American herbalist and Doctor of Naprapathy and was living in Belize when she met an authentic Maya healer by the name of Don Elijio Panti. Under Don Elijio’s guidance Rosita learned thousands of traditional remedies of the rainforest as well as healing techniques such as the uterine or abdominal massage. After Don Elijio’s passing Rosita became the ambassador for his message and is helping to continue research of medicinal rainforest plants.
The Uterus is a tiny organ that can go from being the size of a large fig to a huge watermelon so the suspensory ligaments must be very pliable and flexible. Like anything, the ligaments can be shifted out of place (especially due to a fall or a traumatic injury) and remain out of place for years unbeknownst to the owner. A misplaced uterus can put pressure on the descending colon causing constipation or on the bladder causing frequent urination. Through daily self-care massages or treatments from licensed professionals one can”reset” the uterus.
Misplaced uterus’ are considered to be the ROOT cause of so many ailments such as painful menses, fibroids, cysts, constipation, heavy bleeding, frequent urination, chronic miscarriage…the list goes on and on. The idea is so simple. If the uterus is out of place then the blood cannot discharge properly and stagnation will occur. In Chinese medicine there is a saying “Where there is stagnation there is pain.”
I was told that my uterus was a little low and sliding to the right. After a few moments of massage it was back in place. I couldn’t tell honestly but Cathy Lipsky, one of the wonderful teachers at the Ix Chel center in White Plains, felt it shift. I really was astonished.
The uterus and the lower abdomen is an incredibly powerful region of the body. So many emotions and memories are stored there and the region is so rarely touched. This region correlates to the second Chakra which is involved with fertility, creative expression, artistic endeavors and sensuality. Blockages in this area can affect so many aspects of our lives.
I highly recommend this experience for anyone. For more information on my amazing instructors check out Cathy Lipsky at the Ix Chel Center in White Plains.
